No to Nano

Article by Angela Haldane

Products made with nanotechnology are being sold without adequate scientific research or regulation. These products range from sunscreens to socks.

Britain joins many other countries to call for more research into nanotechnology safety. Many fear that nanoparticles (which can be smaller than viruses) are unsafe for humans. There is virtually no data on the long-term effect on people or other organisms or the wider environment.

Nanosilver – which can be used to keep clothes odour free, could kill aquatic organisms if released into water supplies. Carbon nanofibres, used to strengthen car tyres is damaging to lungs.
