Hormonal Acne

Article by Angela Haldane

Q. I have a major problem with hormonal acne – terrible chest, neck and face spots during my 2 pregnancies and now at 40 yrs old, 2 weeks out of every 4, my neck and face break out and only just clear before the next lot appear. Needless to say I am totally fed up and wondered if there was any natural product that can balance hormones to get rid of this problem once and for all.

A. Hormonal acne that presents on the face (particularly the jawline) and neck respond well to the herb Chaste berry Vitex agnus-castus. It would be best to see a registered medical herbalist (MNZAMH) such as Natural Ange Ltd to have it prescribed properly. You start taking Chasteberry on the first day of the menstrual cycle. It usually takes 3-6 months to get on top of the acne, as it has to rebalance the hormones. There are other herbs which help with acne such as Burdock – Arctium lappa and herbs to promote liver function such as Schisandra – Schissandra chinensis or Milk thistle – Silybum marianum.

The liver plays an important role in the breakdown and elimination of hormones. You could also help with sour food before meals to enhance bile flow, minimise alcohol intake and exercise regularly.

Zinc and vitamin A reduces scarring and accelerates healing. The zinc inhibits testosterone, thereby reducing the oil build up in the pores.
