Q. My daughter suffering from molluscum contagiosum, in which I have been told that it will go of its own accord, but it may take up to 18 months. I’d like to get rid of it by summer.
A. Molluscum contagiosum is a common childhood skin condition caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). Molluscum is very contagious by direct skin to skin contact and also moist surfaces such as pool furniture, bathroom and gym fixtures. It is also common amongst sexually active adults.
Apart from the option of waiting, you can have it removed surgically, or by laser or dry ice.
Other treatments: Molluscum Contagiosum with Silver Nitrate Paste – Pediatric Dermatology 16(5):395-7. September 2002. 389 consecutive patients with molluscum contagiosum were treated with 40% silver nitrate paste. The cure rate was 97.7% and no scars resulted.
I spoke with my local pharmacist who agreed that there is no specific treatment for molluscum contagiosum, however colloidal silver cream is available and that can clear up a variety of skin disorders.
The aromatherapist Dr Bo Hengen recommended the following blend of essential oils in equal parts Lemon Oil (Citrus limonum – organic preferred) and Thyme Sweet (Thymus vulgaris -chemotype geraniol). Apply 1 drop pure up to 3-4 times a day.
